PROPOSED STATUE TO SIR G. GREY.

The Commibtee appointed by the meeting of citizens in connection with bhe move, menb for the erection of a statue to Sic Geo. Grey met yesterday evening in tha Municipal Buildings. Hia Worship tha Mayor (Mr J. J. Holland) presided, and there waa a large attendance. A letter was read from Mr H. Brett regretting Mb inability to be present and enclosing a cheque for £50 fcowarda tho funds. Tbe Mayor said this was the first subscription received, and h© proposed to open a banking account with ib on th_ morrow in bhe name ot the fund. He moved a vote of thanks to Mr Brett for his liberal donation. The motion was carried with acclamation. Reports of commibtees, etc., were presented. A number of photographs of Sir George Grey ab various periods of life were exhibited, and also tha busb made by Mr Major ab Mr Parkinson's atoneworks. Thebusb waa generally regarded aa a very creditable piece of workmanahip although failing to depict a happy hkenesa of Sir George Grey, the cbia especially being unlike that of the original. Still great pleasure waa expressed thab the sculptor's art had advanced so far in tho co'tony. A letter was received from a Wellington sculptor offering to undertake tha execution of the statue. Some discussion took place as to whether the City Council might not take some action in its municipal capacity. Ib was mentioned bhab bhey had spent £3,000 in providing a special building for the Mackelvie art gifts, which was really a Mackelvie. memorial. The general leelmg of the Committee, however, was that no requeab should be made to the Council and that anything Councillors may do should boapontaneous. The Mayor said he intended bringing the matter before members of tha Üby Council personally when they nexb mob. The matter waa therefore left with the Mayor. Mr P. R.
