Drunkenness- — Two first offenders for drunkenness were cautioned and. discharged.—James Chaße was fined 10a, or in default, 7 days' hard labour. Defendant asked time to pay the fine. He wanted to go to Lucas 5 Creek this alternoon.—Mr Nortbcroft said bhab if defendant kept out of Auckland for six months, tbe tine would be remitted. —Wm. Lowndes, charged with drunkenness, was fined 20s, or in defaulb 4 days' hard labour. Defendanb was; given one week to pay the fine.—A gaily-attired young woman aDpeared for bhe tirsb time, and pleaded guilty to being drunk in Queen-street yesterday. She was cautioned and discharged. Alleged Larceny. —At the Police Court yesterday afternoon, evidence for the defence was heard in the charge brought against John McKenzie and Henry Edward Jefferd, alleging that on or about Bth July they did steal from the Waverley Hotel, one leather portmanteau and contents, of total value of £13 Bs, the property of John Chambers Garth.—Mr Lundon, who appeared for accused, submitted that there was no evidence to connecb Jefferd wibh the charge.— The accused McKenzie deposed bhab Jefferd bought bhe identified coat and vest and other goods from witness for £I.—A cabdriver named Egan and Jefferd also gave evidence.—Jefierd was discharged by the Bench, and McKenzie was committed for trial.
