CRIMINAL SITTINGS.
(Before Hie Honor Mr Justice Conolly.) HOKSB STEALING AND FALSE PbKTENCES.— Joseph Antoine Stanislas Poniatowski, professor of phrenology, was found guilty yesterday afternoon on the charge of stealings gelding and buggy and seb of harness, the property of John Broomfield, creamery manager ab Ohaupo; and-attempting to obtain fay false pretences the Sum of €15 from Thoe. Porter.—His Honor sentenced prisoner to 18 rnonoha' imprisonment for each of these offences, the sentences to be conenrrenfc. ••• ■■ ■ ' •
Al.LiiaJBD Horse Stealinc— William McCarthy, a half-caste, about 20-years of age, waß charged that on the 11th of March, at Opotiki, he stole a black gelding, bhe property -■' of Thomas ' Dawson, farmer, afc Opotiki. There was a second counfe againsb accused, charging him witih receiving the horse knowing it to be stolen. Accused pleaded not guilby, and was defended byMr McGregor.—Evidence was given last evening and, this morning in support) of the indicbmenb.— Accused gave evidebceLon his oyrn behalf. He deposed that bv> had a horse answering the description of the one alleged to have been stolen.—^ When accused book Mr Daweon'a horse ho thoughb ib was his. Accused said he still thoughb the horse belonged to him. — Two native witnesses aleo gave evidence as to accused being in possession of a horse as described by accused". —Mr McGregor addressed the jury on behalf of accused/ and ' the Crown Frosecutor replied; — His Honor then summed up the whole case. The case' had nob concluded when we watib to press. His Honor intimated at 2.25 thab he would noo take any further case until 10 o'clock' bo-morrow morning, and the remaining/jurors were then dischargod till thab h^ur.: ' ,
