Shop Assistants Acts the " Timea " thisI morning has the following :—" We have received a number of letters on fcbis subject objecting to our sbatemenb that the law musb be obeyed. That is a.statement of a principle which admits of no discussion. These correspondents take the line that the Shop Assistants' Acb may be disobeyed by everyone who regards its provisions astyran nical. To argue on that line in civilised communities can lead tc no useful result. No one objects to anyone who differs from those whoso duty it is to see the law obeyed taking any action they please. Their ostensible objection is nob that the law is tyrannical, bub that it is defective. Differences of -that kind can ,be decided in the law courts, aa they always have 'been.' Moreover, if there are hardships," Parliament can be s asked to make any alterations that may be necessary to remove them, but bo expect the Government to interfere with tho administration of the law is to ask for a veryjuhdesirable and dangerous thing, for Governments arejusb as much bound by the law as the community is.
