The Earl of Kimberley, in reply to a deputation from those protesting against the atrocities by the Turkish. soldiery in Armenia, said the Imperial Government was irrevocably. pledged. to undertake a bhoiough and searching inquiry, and he trusted that the result of such inquiry would be a permanent remedy for the future. He intimated that France, Russia, and Germany were convinced of the necessity of reform. Such' unanimity was very important, bub extreme caution was however, necessary in dealing with the question, in order bo avoid raising any serious trouble in the East. The efforts of Sir P. H. W. Currie, the British Ambassador in Constantinople, in bringing the matter before the Sultan Were beyond praiee, and, he added, that while the Government did nob desire secrecy, the revealing of the consular reports mighb tend to the embarrassment of the Government.
