ST. PATRICK'S DAY

The Hibernian Society's sports and picnic held in the Domain on Saturday afternoon, in celebration of St. Patrick's Day, wer6 very successful. The procession, accompanied by Hunter's and Impey's bands, arrived'in the Domain aboub eleven o'clock, and a start was soon made to ensure a good' afternoon's sportfor the children. Aplentiful supply of picnic requisites was distributed during' the afternoon, and included sixteen cases of apples, given by the Mayor (Mr J. J. Holland) and Mr W." Crowther, M.H.R, Amongst those present was His Lordship Bishop Luck, who gave away a number of valuable prizes to be competed for by the young people present. In the evening, a mosb successful and well conducted musical entertainment, in aid of St. Patrick's Presbytery fund, was held in Sb. James's Hall, and was attended by a large audience, the body of the hall being crowded. Of the many; excellenb sones rendered during the evening, the choruses by tho children and young ladies, accompanied by a strong orchestra, seemed bo find mosb favour. Several of these were given in *a way thab reflected greab eredib on bhe teaching which the children bad received. Mr P. F. Hiscocks ably conducted on each occasion. The' other artistes, and especially Miss Maud Donovan, a- young lady singer who is promising to give a good accounb of liereelf in the musical profession, also sang very creditably. The services ab Sb. Pabrick h\ Cabhedral yesterday were in keeping with the solemnity of the feasb of Ireland's pabron sainb. Solemn High Mass " coram episcopo," was sung at eleven a.m., bhe Rev. Father Kehoe being celebrant, while the. Rev. Father Madden and Mr Buckley were deacon and; sub-deacon respectively, Brother Joseph .(Marie. Order) being Master of Ceremonies, and Rev.-Fabher Purbon (bhe Bishop's secretary). assistant priesb ab bhe Bishop'ft bhrone. Bishop Luck said ho was highly pleased ab bho success of bhe demonstration on the previous day, but at the.same time regretted there were so many Catholic Irishmen, in Auckland untrrio to bho faith of Sb. Pabrick. as bo send' their children to the public sbhools. Weber's Mass, in G was rendered by the choir, and Mr Briegs. Barig with fine effecb in the solo "Veni Sancbe." The other soloists' were Misses Campion, C. Lorrigan : and Hargreaves, Mrs Hiscocks (alto), and Mr Beehan (tenor). Mr Innes played a beaubiful flute obligato. Ab the vesper service the choir, aided by Miss Campion and Messrs Briggs and Beehan, of the Royal Comic Opera Company, did full jusbice bo Rossi's beaubiful "No. 2 Magnificab" and the various other portions of this grand service. The Rev. Father Madden preached a panegyric on St. Patrick from the text, " Other sheep have I. Them also 1 must bring that there may be one shepherd and one fold." Tbe rev. gentleman stated chat for 1,450 years the work of Sb. Pabrick had endured, a facb which was bhe besb proof of its success. Sb. The choir and orchestra (under Mr Hiscocks) ably rendered Lainbilotte's ex,quisite "No.. 1 Litany." In the "Tantum Ergo "Messrs Briggs (bass) and Beehan (tenor) sang With fine effect The Hon.: J. A. ,Tole and Miss Campion also sang solos ab this service. There was a large congregation ab Sb. Benedicb's yesterday morning. The Rev. Dr. Egan celebrated mass, and . the Rev. Father Gregory preached the sermon. The choir (which was strengthened by members of the-Opera Company) sang Gounod's

" Messe Solennelle." The solos were taken byMadame Neilson, and Messrs S. Deane and Neilson. Ab the ' offertory Madame Neilson sang Mascheroni's "Aye Maria," with a violin obligato by Mr Cooke, and Messrs Fitzgerald, Neilson and Deaue sang a trio by Mercadante.. The evening service was conducted by Dr. Egan, who preached a powerful and effective sermon on the life of St. Patrick. The choir, under Mr W. E. Payne, rendered special music, and Mr Neilson sang " The Holy City." There was a very successful celebration at Panmure and Howick on Saturday, the most successful yeb held. Two concerts were held in the evening. One ab Howick and bhe obher ab Panmure, presided over by Fabher Walber Macdonald, and bobh passed off very satisfactorily.
