PARNELL BOROUGH TROUBLES.

THE LADY COUNCILLOR SPEARS OUT.

At the meeting of the Parnell Borough Council hold yesterday evening, several animated discussions took place, in which the new lady councillor figured prominently. The first was in connection with the turncock's reporb, which abated that he had left a notice with Mrs Mat3on (a councillor) in reference to the supply of water, from one pipe, to two houeea in the Mauukau Road. For this double service she now refused to pay, although she had paid on a provious occasion. Ho had explained that bwo houses could not be supplied from one service, and that a separate service must be piovided for each house. She had replied Bhe did nob care and would nob pay. Mia Mabson characterised the reporb as incorrect. Mr Libtlejohn, she said, had made several appointments to meet her and accompany her to the property, so as to allow her bo explain the difficulty that Had arisen, but he had tailed to carry themoub. Now he sent in this report, which was incorrect. Mrs Mateon went on to say that she did not see why she should be charged for/water rates on the two houses when one service served for both. _Waß she to be pub to the expanse of dividing tho two houses and have, a water supply to each house? While tha tenants paid their rates, she did nob ccc why she should be put to this expense. The Mayor said the law must take its course. Ib was an awkward posibion for a councillor to be placed in, bub there was no other course open to them bub to insist upon their lawß being observed, whether by a councillor or anybody else. Mrs Matson : I do not know how the law stands, bub I shall spend a lot of money over this. The Council should nob listeu to falso reports. ■ ; ,_ . . , The Mayor : Do you declino to pay your rates on these two houses '! Mrs Matson: I havo nothing to do with ib. Mr Thorne is my agent, and I referred bhe turncock who has sent in this false report to him. The Mayor : You must nob say such things. Mr Pollard : Ib shows bad grace for any councillor to bring up'any animus against an employee of tho Council. I should be very sorry to think thab the Foreman of Works had any animus against her, and I hope tq hear no more about it. There is a resolution of the Council that no two houses shall be supplied from one pipe. The Council then agreed to instruct tho turncock to aeo thab the laws of tho Council were carried out, and bhab the provious resolution of the Council wa« given effect

to. Mrs Matson : I will conteeb ib ab law. It's againsb me. The Mayor ; Order, order. Later on Mrs Matson, in accordance with notice of motion, moved thab a correct record of the Council's business be entered in the minutes of the 12th November lasb. These minutes ataled thab she had seconded a proposition to proceed against persons in arrear with their rates. Sho denied that this was correct, and produced a copy of the Auckland Star of November 13th showing that the motion was not seconded by her but by Cr. Wright. The " Herald," she said, gave a similar version of the proceedings. The motion Jell through for want of a seconder. The Mayor eaid ib was nob worth while for Mrs Matson bringing np these repented resolutions, and taking up the time of the Council. The Council appeared to be under the impression that it was a correct record in the minuto book, or thoy would have seconded her proposition. Subsequently, Mr Pollard drew attention to the question of barring and sanding the streets. Mrs. Matson complained that certain work authorised several months ago, had not been yec dono. . t The Mayor said he did not think ib right that members should usethaGoucil to'press cheir private claims* The Town Clerk had informed him these matters were being attended to as quiculy as thoy could be, and that some work had been authorised two years ago which had nob yet been done.
