Christchprch, Monday. T^e reports in both the, morning papers state that a most disgraceful scene occurred ob the meeting of Air MacLachlan, M.H.R., at" South Rakaia on Friday night., It is declared unequivocally that the. member fpr Ashburton was under the influence of liquor to such an extent that he,was unable to deliver his speech. No arrangements, it is stated, bad been made for a chairman, and after an unseemly attack by Mr MacLachlan on a resident, who said he would have presided had he been asked, a gentleman took the chair, but in plain terms told the member of hit condition and advised him to abandon the meeting. Mr MacLachlan elected to go on, however, bub after on unsuccessful attempt to commence his speech he gave in, and the audience, among whom were many ladies, left bhe hall, the scene terminating by the member falling off the stage..
