The firsb ordinary meeting of the Board of Education foe the new year was hejd today. Present:- Mr R. Udy (in the chair), and Messrs Luke, Muir, Wilding, Lambe, Woodward^Coopor, and the Rev. J. Grafton and Newtoß : Authorised tarring and Banding of school ground under direction of architects. Morrinsville:' Request tor enlargement of school has been declined. Mount Albert: Granted,£l to eradicate fnrze from school ground. Newmarket1: Granted cost of a water'meter. Otahuhu : Committee have been furnished with information available -as to examination results in certain schools. Ponsonby : Authorised repairs to roof of scool at a cost of £5. The report also dealt with a large number of small grants made to country schools. Scholarships;—-The report of the Chairman and Executive Committee stated application had been made to the Governors of the Auckland College and Grammar School for the privilege of free tuition to be extended to the five highest) on the list of those who; had gained junior certificates of proficiency. Obituary.—The Chairman in his report regretted the deaths of the following teachers :—Lieutenant-Colonel Smith, head teacher of the Huntly School; Mr Michael P. Mulligan, pupil teacher, Kauaeranga Boys School.—On the motion of the Chairman it was agreed to send a letter of condolence to the widow of Lieut.-Colonel Smith, and allow her three months'salary. Chapel-street School. —The City Schools Committee wrote, protesting against the Board's decision to open a new school in Union-street, arid stating that they still adhered to their former proposal to enlarge the Chapel-etreeb School.—lt was agreed thab the Board should confer with the pity Schools Committee on the matter on Friday next, in the moantime the Board's architect to inspect the school and report us to the accommodation and its sanitary condition.
