THE TAXATION DEBATE.
Sydney, this day. Attektion has been drawn to the fact thab the Income Tax Bill, now before the Legislative Council, differs from the former Bill by compelling British or outside companies or inßtitutions located here to pay Is 4d in £on their profits. The debate is proceeding. A motion for the reduction of railway freights provides that any deficiency caused by the reduction shall be made up from the general revenue, and, if necessary, thab direct taxation be imposed to cover any loss.
Mr Wheeler adversely criticised the motion, which he declared involved an outlay of over half a million. The Minister for Railways said the Government had no objection Co a reduction if the deficit were made up. The Premier said he would oppose the motion unless ib was modified so as to ensure direct taxation.
