HOW A .MISTAKE OCCURRED.

After the result of the recent scholarship 'examinations as published in the Star had been read at to-day's meeting of the Board of Education, Mr Muir drew attention to the fact that an erroneous report of the result had been supplied to the newspapers. This had caused pain and mortification to some parties. He asked how the mistake occurred, and whab means' the Board intended to adopt to prevent a recurrence of the unfortunato affair. . It was explained that when the results of the examination were being made up in the office for the Star that the number of candidate 66 was mis-read by the Secretary as 65. (schools average over 300): 19 passed, 83 failed, 2 absent, 104 total number entered. Class C. (schools average 100 to 500): 4 passed, 31 failed, 35 total number entered. Class D (schools averago under 100): 4 passed, 27 failed, one absent, total number entered, 32. Class E (schools taught by one teacher only): 1 passed, 8 failed, 9 entered. The reprts of the examiners on the senior scholarship results were read. It was agreed to send copies of the results of the examination and reports of the examiners to the headmasters of the Auckland and Thames Grammar Schools and other schools interested.
