The statutory meeting of the Newton Borough Council watf held loafc night. Present : Mr Thomaa English (the retiring Mayor). Mr R. K. Warnock (the uaayorelecb), and Cra. Shackelford, Davenport, Wilson, Lee, Watson, Donald,. Holden. The firsb business was the installation of Mr R. Warnock as Mayor. Mr English aaid he hoped tho new Mayor would have as pleasanb a time as he had. He thoughb their meetings compared favourably with those of other borough councils, as the members'of the Council came to do business and did ib. Matters wenbon pleasantly enough, even to suit a la^y mayor. When he book office the funds were very low, owing to the expense of tho Greab North Road contract, bub by going on steadily they had lived within their income. He augured for the Newton Borough a fairly prosperous future. Mr Warnock then made the usual declaration and took the chair. He thanked the Council for their unsought honour. He would have been pleased had Mr Englishes health permitted him to occupy tho chair for anobher year. However, he could assure them as he had been placed in office he would do all in his power to carry on the business for the welfare of the borough. Cr. Shackelford expressed regre^ ab Mr English severing his connesbion with the Council. He felt he spoke for tho whole Council when he said that they wero satisfied with the courtesy and attention bo business shown by Mr English and his fair rulings. Cr. Donald said he had sab under four Mayors, and Mayor English's term had been one of the moab pleasant. Mr Engliah returned thanks for the kind expressions from the Council and then retired.
