POLICE COURT—(THIS DAY.)

Drunkenness.— Jas. Gamble was charged with being drunk, bat did nob appear. —Inspector Hickson explained that the charge against defendant had been adjourned from the sth September, to give the man an opportunity to reform. The man had nob been seen since by the police. —Thos. Cain was charged with a similar offence. Defendant denied the charge, aud added, " I was knocked up. with working hard, if two pints of beer made me drunk." Constables Finnerby and Bailey deposed that the defendant was " dead drunk."—Mr Northcroft a drised the man not to got bo tired again, and discharged him.

An Eller^lie Case,—An old woman named Margareb Williams, residing at Elleralie, was charged with being drunk on tba race-course on the 15th September. —Inspector Hickson said this case arose out of a complaint defendant had made to the police. She said she was assaulted, but ie was found on inquiry there was no truth in tho statement.—Two witnesses named W. S. Wilkins and Conolly and Sergeant Gamble gave evidence as to the woman being drunk on the 15th September. —Mr Northcrofb said he would discharge defendant, but she would have to pay 23a costs, a month's time being allowed.

Breach of The By-laws.—Jas. Hay was fined Is and 7s costs for driving a hansom cab at other than a walking pace round the corner of Queen and Quay Streets.

Alleged Bawdy Houses. —Cecilia Johnston was charged that on the 24th September she did keep a common bawdy house in Cook-streeb.—Mr Brassey appeared for defendant.—Const. Quirk said that he bad known defendant about 18 months. She was a reputed prostitute. He visited defendant's house on the 24th September, at about 9.45 p.m., with Constables Bailey and McMahon. Witness saw five men in the houße. There were also in the house at the time of his visit the defendant, Mary Lett, a reputed prostitute, and an old woman named Mary Swift, a convicted thief. Witness also deposed to visits to defendant's house on the 21st and 22nd September, and what he saw there. — Constable Bailey gave evidence.— Corroborative evidence was also given by Constables McMahon, Howell, and Sergeant Lyons.—Detective Grace and James Bevage were also examined for tho prosecution.—The case was proceeding when wo wenb to press.
