Flight of a Chinese Traitor,
1 Shanghai, October 1. Pkince Kung, uncle of the Emperor of China, has been appointed codirector of the war with Li Hung Chang. The Japanese have declared lead contraband of war. The Japanese forces have occupied Meichow on the road to Moukden, unopposed. It is reported that the Governor of Tientsin has been betraying Chinese movements to the Japanese since the beginning of the war, and has now fled the country. .. i i Shanghai, October 2. Sung Kwei, the Emperor's father-in-law, has selected five thousand men to defend the approaches from the coast to the capital. The Emperor is showering favours on Prince Kung. Europeans living inland are rushing to the coast cities to secure the protection of the warships.
The army of thirty thousand Japanese, which recently sailed from Hiroshima, has landed at Shintung, in the Gulf of Pe-Chili, and is approaching Tientsing.
- The intention of marching upon Pekin is confirmed by the appearance oi this force in the Chinese territory.
Remnants of the Chinese army, who escaped from the slaughter at Ping Yang, have arrived at Moukden.
The stones they tell of the horrors of the flight have stricken the garrison with panic.
The Empress Dowager, notwithstanding his disgrace, vigorously supports Li Hung Chang.
The main Japanese army, which has driven the Chinese from Corea, is approaching Moukden.
Executions in the Chinese camp at Tientsin for the purpose of preserving discipline are of daily occurrence. The troops are without clothing, food, or arms. The statement that Wiju has been evacuated is confirmed. The temains of the Chinese army are encamped on the northern barifc of theYalu. ■ - ss.': ■ :.'■<>- ir*,'i?? i It is reported that the Japanese army which left Hiroshima has--landed between the Yellow River and Tientsin. The Chinese are sending troops to Formosa.
