BANKING AFFAIRS.
WHAT THE OTAGO " DAILY «?,:■!- • TIMES" SAYS, iv*"*^
(BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
JJuxedin, this day.
The "Times " ia quite jubilant over the turn which bank aflairs have taken. It says :—" On each side the stand taken is sufficiently tirm to induce the belief that the amalgamation echerae is now dead. It will be a fortunate thing for the colony if ib bears no more of it." ■ The "Times" points out thab its opposition to amalgamation was dictated by a strong belief that tho movement was inimical to the best interests of the colony: As to the Colonial : Bank, ib remarks: "There may have been and probably ars still mistakes in its management, as there are in the cases of all such corporations, bub on tho whole it has been a credit.to all who are connected with it, and it has also done good service to the colony. Whatever its troubles are we do not believe they are such as to cause the leaab fear as to its fubure, and we firmly believe that if its directors meet the present position wibh tho firmness with which they have declined to accept tho Government's alterations in the amalgamation agreement, public confidence in the Bank will nob Buffer any diminution." It advises the Bank to strengthen ita capital, and says, "With the adoption of that course there could belittle doubt of, an increase of sound business. If share capital is.to be called, shareholders need never be made,, bo feel ib severely, «b the money might be collected very gradually, co as to make the burden almost unfelt. The shareholders will rejoice that the independence) of the institution of which they are justly proud has been saved to them."
