LOCAL GOVERNING BODIES.

The annual meeting of the Thames Licensing Committee was held on June the 29th. Applications for renewals to tho Pacific and Junction Hotels were granted, bub fchab for Mr Costello'a Claremonb Hotel, Karaka Creek, was refused on the ground thab the premises are nob up to the required standard. Tho license for the Bridge Hotel ab Coromandel, owned by Messrs Seccombe and Son, was refused, in consequence o£ twenty-one days' notice nob havine been given by advertisement. A similar objection was raised in i the case of Mr Reynolds, and the Royal Mail Hotel ab Coromandel, but eventually the license was granted. Mr Loram, junior, was refused a license for a new hotel intended to be built ab Coromandel, in the place of one destroyed by fire, on tho ground thab the applicanb was under age, and no steps having been taken to rebuild. Ab conclusion of the proceedings, Mr lillersaid that Mr Ehrenfried, owner of no Empire Hotel in Grabamsfcown, a license for which had been refused ab bhe last meeting, intended instituting proceedings in the Supreme Court, to compel the Committee to grant a license, and asked them bo appoinb a solicitor to receive service of writ. Tho Committee are now considering bhe matter in camera. The Masterton Licensing Committee refused bhe license for the Whakatake Hotel, on bhe grounds thab the repairs stipulated had nob been effected. The Lybbelbon Licensing Committee refused licenses to the Crown, Railway and Cambridge Hotels. The Taieri (Otago) Licensing Committee refused to granb a license to the Moggiel Hotel, Mosgiel, and to the Reliance, Otakio. An application for an accommodation license at Berwick was also refused. The Invercargill Licensiug Committee finally decided nob to granb renewals of licenses to seven hotels, viz. : Prince of Wales, Union, Stag's Head, Supreme Court, Mitson's, Golden Fleece, and Strathearn. Mr Rattray, solicitor for several of the applicants, asked the Committee to appoinb some of the number to accepb service of writs, as the decisions are likely to be questioned, with the view ot having authorities, ruling on tho provisions of the Act.
