THE DEPUTATION TO THE MAYOR.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—Permit me to nay that in replying to i the deputation which waited on mo yesterday morning, in reference to the proposed city, loan, my remark that I did not wish to establish a precedent, had no reference to receiving the deputation, but to the request to supply in wriMng information that could be obtained by application, and otherwise expressing opinions and views in which the Council had not boen consulted, or expressed any opinion.—l am, etc., Jas. J. Holland. June 19tb, 1894.
(To the Editor.) Sib,—l desire to correct a statement made by the Mayor at the meeting yesterday with the deputation re the proposed city loan. His Worship is reported to have stated that the last petition received was from Ponsonby Ward, asking for a road that would cost hundreds of pounds. Nothing of the kind. The City Engineer's estimate as reported by the Star and " Herald " was only £100, and considering the ratepayers concerned (Marine Parade) ; have paid the rates levied—probably several hundred pounds—uncomplainingly during the past 20 to 25 years, surely they are now fully entitled to some return for their money.—lam, etc., Thos. Jenkins. Herne Bay, tonsonby, June 18. (To the Editor.) Sir.—l ccc a few of the ratepayers object to the loan, but I, as a ratepayer, think it is a good thing to borrow to pay off the overdraft, when, by co doing, they can save from li to 2 per cent. They will borrow at 5 per cent., which is a low rate of interest for the colonies.—l am, etc., Ratepayer.
