HE WANTED A MONTH.
COULD GET NO WORK.
It is not often thab a prisoner at the Court wishes to fix his own sentence, bub such was the case this morning. A man named Henry Harmer was charged with having stolen one pair of boots, value 5s 6d, the property of Richard Garrett. Prisoner ploaded guilty. Sergeant Gamble said thab about 7.30 o'clock last nighb the accused was seen to take the pair of shoas. He was followed and handed over to tho police. The boots had been hanging outside the shop. The accused said to the constable thab he did the action deliberately and intentionally with the object of gebting into gaol, as he could not find employment, and ib was hia lasb resource fco geb locked up.
MrNorthcroft, S.M.: What have you to say for yourself ? Prisoner: I have no apology, I have nothing I wish to say.
Mr Nortbcroffc: How long do you want to be in prison ?
Prisoner: A month.
Mr Northcrofb: Thab will only tako you into the middle of winter.
Prisoner: Ib will take me oub of further trouble.
Mr Northcreft: Alrighb; I sentence you to five weeks hard labour. You know I cannob allow you to name your own time* Prisoner: Thanks, Your Worship.
