Mr Edwin Harrow caused a slip;lit diversion at the meeting of the Devonport Borough Council last evening. He waited on the Council with reference to the much-vexed question of the water supply from Lake Takapuna, and in advising the Mayor and Councillors, said that ho wished the Council to take precautions to ensure the purity of the water in the Lake. Tho Waifcemata County Council had referred him to the Doyonport Council when he asked them about the sanitary arrangements at the Lake. He oompkined of nuisances likely to injuro the water of the Lake, and went on to cay that the waters of Takapuna possessed certain valuable medicinal properties. (Laughter.) They read in the Bible, he said, about tho waters of the Jordan curing leprosy, but they were nothing to the waters of Lake Takapuna. (Laughter.) For instance, if a dog covered with fleas was senb into the Lake the water killed the fleas directly (laughter), and ib also had a fatal effect on other insects which ho specified. He asked the Council to take steps to prevent tho Lake being polluted. The Alayor (Mr E. W. Alison), said that as far aa he could heaii there -.were no polluting drains or anything of that sort discharging into the Lake. Mr Harrow admitted that one species of nuisance he complained of did not now exist. The Mayor informed him thab when the water supply for the Devonporfc Borough wan started, the Council could take steps to .prevent any pollution of the Lake water.
