The Premier, in reply to a question, said he was making inquiries as to the condition of the New Australia scheme, and had already.authorised the Agent-General to expend several hundred pounds if necessary to pay the people's. passages back to fine from New Australia writes that he left the settlement without falling out with anyone as he saw trouble brewing. Lane, the founder, had the fault—and sna thing like Now Australia it was a big fault —that he was nob the leader of the men, and could noc keep the people together. But, the writer adde, no man lives who wants to do more for his fellowmen than Lane. . A New Australian, writing to his relative?, statea that ever since the settlement opened, there has been nothing but rows and quarrels. One or two; he says, wanted to "run the show," but half the people objected, and the matter ended, by Lane expelling three who persisted in asking questions about things. The statement that the men were drinking, he denied, and sfatea that was osly an excuse to get rid of them.
