COLLAPSE OF THE REBELS,
CAUSED BY WANT OF PROVISIONS.
New York, March 17. President Peixoto, in a message to President Cleveland, .thanks the United States for its aid in bringing the revolt to a close. v
Despatches from Rio de Janeiro state that the rebels collapsed owing to want of provisions.
President Peixoto has made a formal demand on the Portuguese Admiral tft surrender Da Gama and the other rebel officers who sought refuge in a Portuguese warship. The President bases his request on the ground that tbe refugees am pi^rca. The Portuguese Admiral Bays he cannot comply with the request until ho has consulted the authorities af;Lisbon on tho subject.
The action of the Portuguese in assisting the rebel leaders has irritated the loyalists, and the forts prevented several Portuguese vessels, which were known to have some rebels on board, from leaving Rio do Jaaeiro harbour.
