RIZE V^OM PETITION I Recognising that little or no encouragement rewards the efforts of the New Zealand amateur in art. the proprietor of tbe "Graphic "has determined on offering TWO PRIZES FOR THE BEST PICTURE OR SKETCH (In Water Colour or Monochrome), of NEW ZEALAND T IFE, qCENERY, or /CHARACTER By An Amateur Artist. Choice of Subject is absolutely unlimited, saving that it must be characteristic of New Zealand. Landscape, marine, sylvan, or gendre pictures are equally eligible. £3-THE FIRST PR I Z E-f 3 will be awarded tho best picture or sketch sent in. £2—THE SECOND PRIZE—£2 for-the second best. These and such of the sketches sent in as may be deemed worthy, will be published from time to time in the " New Zealand Graphic." The judges will award the prize to the BEST PICTURE, unbiassed by any prejudice ; but it is to be hoped on effort will be made to avoid hackneyed and much-painted subjects. CAREFUL ATTENTION TO THE RULES IS IMPERATIVE. 1. Sketches mubt NOT be on rough grained paper—smooth paper or bribtol board is indispensable. N.B.—This rule is absolutely imperative. Any infringement will Infallibly lead to prompt disqualification. 2. Amateurs only are allowed to compete. Persons making their living entirely by painting or teaching painting cannot be considered amateurs. Such persons ore professionals, and as suoh disqualified from competition. 3. With regard to size, little restriction is exercised. No sketch must he less than 10 inches by 8 (either way of the picture), but otherwise the artist may chose whatever size enables him or her to produce the best effect. 4. All sketches sent in become the property of the " New Zealand Graphic," and can be used Or discarded at the discretion of the proprietor. 5. No frames are required. 6. Sketches must be sent carefully packed, and not folded or creased, but carefully rolled or packed flat betwoen two boards. 7. The judging will be by persons who baro not papas to push or favourites to help—a revolt not always attained by the Art Societies. 8.
