WELLESLEY STREET SCHOOL

DISTRIBUTION OF CERTIFICATES.

This morning at ten o'clock, Mr Blades, Chairman of the Uity Schools Committee, attended at the Wellesley-street School to present to the successful competitors the certificates won by them at the recent scholarships examination.

Mr Blades expressed his satisfaction that Weilesloy-Btreet School was again well to the front in taking this year three scholarships and four certificates of proficiency, and be hoped this would be an encouragement and inducement to present pupils to strive earnestly to keep up the reputation of the school. He then presented certificates of scholarships to Mi6B Emily Cullens, MasterGsorgeStepLeneon and Master Tom Easdown. Certificates of Proficiency were presented to Misees Jalia Crawley and Ady Buckland and to Masters John Ramsay and Henry Butler. These scholarship certificates entitle the holders to three years' course of free tuition at the Auckland College and Grammar School, where, it they are industrious and persevering, other distinctions may be obtained.

j Mr Worthington, headmaster, thanked LMr Blades for his attendance and the kind j words of encouragement to the pupils. He | said be believed the three scholarships presented to-day made up the Wellesley-street School record of scholarships to 64, which ho eaid was nob excelled by any other school. Many former pupils of Welleeley. street had gone forth with scholarships which had proved the foundation of aiuuu greater distinctions. He instanced Mr David Hamilton Jackson, who had taken bis scholarship at Wellesley-street school, and now held honours which be had gained in competition with ail the colony. It showed the advantage of a good and thorough foundation. Mr Worthington took this opportunity, in presence of the Chairman of the Committee, of thanking Mr Drafiin and the several members of the staff for the able manner in which the school bad been conducted during his absence ou account of til-health.
