HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The ordinary meeting of the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Boatd yesterday afternoon was attended by Meserb J. Bollard (Chairman), J. Gordon, J. Swales, J. McCabo, Trouwith, Ambury, Bruce and J. M. Lennox.

Dr. Poechas's Holiday.—A letter was read from Dr. A. C. Purchas, honorary ophthalmic surgeon to the Ho-pital, stating with reference to the Board's recent discussion of his absence from Auckland that he objected to the Board's interference with his private movements outside of the Hospital and informing the Board that the explanation of his absence over tho seven days would be found on. inquiry at the office of the Union Steamship Company.— Mr McCabe moved, " That the letter he received and considered satisfactory."—Mr Bruce moved as an amendment, " That the letter be not received, i,t being far irom satisfactory."—Mr Gordon considered tho letter an insult to the Board, tie thought! that Dr. Purchas was one of those highhanded, haughty gentlemen that the Board has sometimes to deal with.—The Chairman thought that the Board were perhaps a little to blame for the manner in which they had discussed the affairs of Dr. Purchas, but there were faults on both sides.—After eotne further discussion the letter was received.

Hospital Reserves,— A letter was received from the Public Trustee, enclosing a statement of the receipts and expenditure of the Auckland Hospital Reserves Fund for the past year, from which it apoeared thab the rents received totalled £2,581 3s lid, and the interest allowed thereon was only £7 14s 6d.—On the motion of iho Chairman, it was resolved to call the attention of the Public Trustoe to the sinail amount of interest paid on the fund.—The Government Office commission was eet forth in the statement as £133 17s Id.

Board Fixance. — The Secretary submitted a forecast estimate- of expenditure for the past year, from which it appeared that the expenditure up to March 31st next was estimated to be £4,172, and the incume for the came period at £4,176 15s 2d.

Costlby Home.—The Committee of the Costley Home reported that they .had decided to refer the question of purchasing additional allotments at the Home back to the Board.—lt was decided to consider the matter at a meeting of the full Committee before next ordinary meeting of the Board. The Board granted fourteen days leave of absence to the Manager of the Home.

House Physician.—The House Commibtee recommended that applications for the position of house physician be advertised for» duties to begin on Ist.—The Board adopted the recommendation of the Committee, and decided that) bhe salary should be £200 a year.

IncubadiiE Casks.—The House Committee reported thab in its opinion there was nob sufficient accommodation at the Hospital for incurable canes, if other cueos which could be benefittd were to bo admitted. Rule 130 forbade the admission of incurables. This report had arisen out of the question of sending incurable and convalescent patients from the Hospital to the Home. The House Committee was aIBO of opinion that additional nursing attendance should be provided ub tho Home.—The report was adoptod.
