Wellington, this day. H.M.3. Ltzasd, which arrived from Milford Sound yesterday afternoon, encountered the full force of the north-east gale on Friday afternoon.

At four p.m., when the gale was at Jta beigbb, a heavy sea broke aboard, washing two men, W. Tucker, L.S., and A. Street, A.8., off the bowsprit.

Measures were at once taken to save them, but Tucker sank before help could be given.

A life buoy was thrown to Street, who is a powerful swimmer. He was unable to grasp it, but managed to secure a leadline and was hauled on board in almost the last stages of exhaustion.

Three other Beamen were washed on to the upper deck and narrowly escaped going overboard, while a large boab was carried away.

At the time of the accident the vessel was about eighteen miles south-west of Cape Foulwind.

The gale continued with unabated force, and ab 3 a.m. on Saturday morning the large whaleboat disappeared overboard. From 8 a.m. the vessel was hovo-to for several hours, but the weather moderated and she proceeded on her course. Tucker was a native of Devonshire 24 years okl.and had been about 7 years in the navy.

Considerable damage was done to deck gear.
