CORONER'S INQUIRY.

* A PECULIAR VERDICT.

Mr Chari.es Robert-, -.P., held an inquiry into the circumstances . connected wibh the destruction of Mrs Bergban's store by fire .at Ahipara, particulars of which have previously been published. Tira Parikina deposed to being awakened by the glare of the flames and calling Mlw Berghan and her brothers. Cecilia Berghat. deposed that when she was called the flames were breakiug from the middl* of tbe roof. She did nob call any neighbours as it was then too late for them to be of use. She valued the stock in the store at £400*. She was aware that an agenb, Mr Edwards' had since fixed the valuation at £20o! David and Sydney Berghan also gave evidence. The latter stated that a half-caste and himself were the lasb persons in the ' store. They both struck matches, but ho was sure they were extinguished. Elizabeth Bergan, mothorof the lasb witness, deposed that the stock was worth £400, and the building between £20 and £30. Building and stock were insured for £250 i» bhe Alliance office. Constable Dunn aleo gave evidence. The jury, after some deliberation, returned the following verdict: —"The store at Ahipara was intentionally sob fire to, but the evidence is tot sufficiently conclusive to judge by whom it was done. We also consider thab great blame is attached to the person in en&rgt. for nob calling in aid."
