AUCKLAND AMATEUR ATHLETIC CLUB.

TO-MORROW'S CARNIVAL.

The twenty-eight carnival of the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club will be held on the Domain cricket ground tomorrow atternoon, and if their usual weather prevails, no doubt Aucklanders will tear themselves away from the strife of the elections, and spend the afternoon in witnessing the- trials of Bpeed and endurance (on the wheel as well aa on foot) of the young men of this fair city. The competitors on this occasion are not solely confined to the town, for among the entries are athletes from Waikato, Tauranga, Mercury Bay and Holensville. The programme of events is a lengthy anil varied one, but with Mr Edwards as starter, the public may depend on each race starting to time. It is the splendid management of these carnivals that helps to make the Club's gatherings so popular with the public. For the convenience of the fair sex, who so numerously patronise these carnivals, afternoon tea will be served in .the large tent at the Hospital end ot the ground, and ladies aro requested to partake of the refreshments offered. The inmates of the various Orphan Homes and charitable Institutions in thia city have again been invited to attend, and one of the features of the programme will be a display of the Indian clubs exercises to music by the children of the Parnell Orphan Home, under their instructor, Professor Carrollo. The Domain oval has been well patronised during the evenings this week, by large numbers of spectators watching the numerous runners and cyclists doing their training exercises. A splendid track has been laid out, and should fine weather prevail, some fast times are expected to be recorded. In the walking events, it is anticipated that the Auckland champion, Mr A. F. Burton, will beat the Australasian records. Mr G. B. Beere, our crack long - distance runner, had intended to alao try and equal the records, but unfortunately he was removed this week to the Rotorua branch of the railway. Judging by the form displayed on the track this week, the bicycle racos should produce some exciting finishes. The Club have wisely decided to give timo handicaps in the five-mile bicycle race, so that the public should now be able to follow tho changes in the race without geocing muddled as to which competitor is leading. The Victor Ludorum for the cyclists will be decided at this meeting, and another popular race—the Ladies' .Bracelet —in which the wheelmen are nominated by fair admirers, sisters, cousins, or aunts. The Committee of the Club intend to select) their representatives for the New Zealand Championship Meeting from the form displayed ab to-morrow's gathering. Hunter's Artillery Band*• will provide the musical portion of the programme. The first race starts punctually at 1.30 p.m. * Mr,G. Peace will judge the walking events. ACT/EON'S TIPS. Following the usual custom, I will endeavour to disclose tho probable winners (oo easy task at any timo) of the various events to be decided. Want of space prevents me reviewing the chances ot the competitors at length, so without any whys or wherefores my predictions are :— 150 yds Maiden.—J- M9.-cer, 1 ; J. E. Crammond, 2 ; J. Meldrum. 3. 100 yds Handicap.—Buchanan, Hesketh, Wilson, .Freeman, Haekett, Stewart, F. "Oarton, Jones ond Crammond should be among those in fcbe final heat, and although Wilson boat Hesketr. yesterday in a trial, doing wonderful r.ime, any vote is for J. H. Buchanen, 1; C. fleskatb, 2; T. F. Wi!*on, 3. ' . , 250 yds Handicap.—The winners of the shorter sprint shonl'd also annex this race. My tip is J. H. Buchanan, 1; F. E. N. Gaudin, 2 ; W. C. Chen hire, 3. _ , One Mile Walk.—Both Cossar and Dickey are reported to havo done phenomenal trials, but with such noted walkers as Burton and Whibe behind them they will have to step out briiskly. Reynolds, astonished hia Club mates as well as the Southerners by his wonderful sprinting powers last December. Never before have we had such a number of fast cyclists, and the races bo-morrow promise to produce greater interest than they have occasioned for some years past. The track is in good order, and fast times may be expected. From trials that have been accomplished over the quarter-mile, a iasb race may be looked forward to, and with favourable weather it is expected that Reynolds will closely approach the Now Zealand record, which stands to the crediit of Mr W. J. S. Hay ward. Reynolds. Surman, Colborough, bniifcb, Pilkington, and Giilbert, all appear to be greatly improved, and I expect to see them well forward to-morrow.
