Maynard was defeated by the Independent Democrats, and the Tammany ticket carried in New York.

McKinley's decisive victory for the Governorship of Ohio encourages the hope of his party tlmb he will be nominated as the Republican candidate at the next Presidential election. The Republicans also meb with great success in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and lowa. The Democrats carried Kentucky, Virginia and Maryland.
