NEWTON SUNDAY-SCHOOL SOIREE.
Although tea meetings are quite bhe fashion nowadays, still the soiree in conuocbion 'with tho Mowbon Congregabional Sundayschool anniversary lasb evening was an unqualified success. A large number of scholars and friends sab down bo bea, bhe tables being amply provided. Ab bho public meebing held subsequently, there was a still larger attendance. Mr John Ellyebt occupied the chair, and delivered a short address. Several of the anniversary hymns were sung by tho scholars in admirable style, valuable assistance being rendered by an efficient orchestra. Mr Enoch Wood presided ab bhe organ, and deserves every credib for the success attained in training the scholars. An anthem was sung in fine style, bhe tenor solo being well taken by Mr A. Rowe (junior). Miss L. Hobson also sang tho solo in " Lead me Genbly " capitally The annual report as read by the Secretary, Mr S. Frith, showed that the p&Bt year's operations had been satisfactory. At the same time touching reference waa made to the death of a senior member of the Bible class, Miss M. Peace, also to the decease of # an old scholar in Melbourne, Mr Richard Redfern. Mrs Laird, who was lost on the schooner Mnile, had also belonged to tho school. The roll showed that there were 22 teachers and 255 scholars connected with the school. Various orgauisa tions wore reported as follows:—Biblereading Association, 100 members ; Christian Endeavour Society, 28 ; Band of Hope, 205. The report further stated that tbe Jubilee Choir, started by Mr F. Rowe, had raised £50 during the year. The Treasurer's statemenb showed receipts from all sources to have been £205 lis ld, and the expenditure lefb a credib balance in hand of £32 15s 7d. Addresses were delivered during bhe evening by the Rev. G. Burgess, Rev. C. Carter, and Mr Enoch Wood. Vobes of thanks wero accorded all who had assisted ab bhe anniversary services.
