BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETINGS.

DEVONPORT.

Last evening the ueual business meeting of the Devonport Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers, North Shore, there being present:—Mesßrs E. W. Alison (Mayor), M. Niccol, Hammond, 0. Maya, Macky, Lankham, Wynyard, and Avenel.

Waterworks Contract.— An application wtiH read from James Malcolm, one of the tenderers for the No. 3 waterworks contract, for the return of bis £50 deposited with Council, and also an application from the tenderer's solicitor(Heskethand Richmond), for the same. These were referred to the borough solicitors (Messrs Devore and Cooper), together wish Crs. Niccol and Mays.—A memo re law costs from the solicitors of borough in connection with the waterworks, a lump sum of £100 being named, was also received. Thu Counoil considered this a very reasonable amount. —The matter was referred to the Finance Committee.

Elections. — An application was read from the Registrar of the Eden electorata for the use of the Municipal Chambers for tho general election. —The application was granted, at a fee of £1 le. 'Bus Services.—The stage coach license of Messrs Davis Bros, was transferred to Viessi'B I'atorson and Co.—The TakapunaNorth Shore 'bus time-table of Messrs Paterson and Co. was submitted and was approved of. The 'bus biine-tabio of Mr Morley was also submitted and approved of.—Henry Coe made an application for a stage coach license.—The matter was referred to the Inspector of Vehicles to report on.

Resignation.—Mr P. H. Mason wrote tendering his resignation as member of the Borough Council.—The Mayor expressed bie great regret at the termination by Mr Maeon of hie term of office as a Councillor, and other members of the Council expressed themselves to similar effect. On the motion of the Mayor it was resolved : " That the resignation of Cr, Mason be accepted with great regret, and that the Counoil record their appreciation of the unselfish and grdnoup services rendered by him as member of tho Council."

Clarence-street. — A deputation of Clarence-Btreeb residents waited upon the Council re an application to avoid the steps in that) street and to make a graded path instead. A plan was submitted by Mr Roberts to show that it was practicable.— This was referred to the next meeting of the Council, Mr Boylan and Mr Roberts to be present. Stage Coach License.—A letter was read from Mrs Martin asking for a refund of borough stage coach license fee as the license was cancelled, and it was referred to next meeting. Town Clerk. —The Town Clerk applied for leave of absence for one month.—Leave was granted. Mr Seaman will discharge the duties of Town Clerk during his absence. PARNELL. The ordinary meeting of the Parnell Borough Council was held last evening, when there were present:—Messrs J. McCabe (Mayor), Page, Whifcley, Withy, Walker, Thornes, Briggs, Gilinour and Wright. Contract Monies.—The Official Assignee (Mr J. Lawson) wrote claiming all monies thab stand to the credit of Mr Bennett, contractor, in the Council's bookß. He only became aware of the fact that the Council owed Mr Bennett money through the press notices.—lt was resolved to inform him thatthe Council owed Mr Bennett no money, as he had failed to carry out his contracb. The deposit had, therefore, been forfeited. It wae decided to inform Mr Craig that the Council could not recognise any agreement between himself and Mr Bennett. Drainage.—Mr J. B. iStoney wrote asking what steps the Council propose to take in connection with the drainage of tho Orphan Home. It was decided to inform the Secretary that the matter had been adjourned to November 6th when the drainage question will be discussed. Finance.—The Auditor General returned the Council's half yearly financial statement, which he certified as correct. Current accounts to the amount of £45 7s Id were passed for payment. In reply to a question by Cr. Withy, the Mayor stated that the overdraft was £265, including amounts just passed, and that rates were not coming in very rapidly. The Finance and Legal Committee forwarded the following recommendations, which were adopted:—(l) That Fire Brigade be removed to new site. (2) That no increase be granted to the Dog Registrar. (3) That Messrs Hesketh and Richmond be asked to attend the meeting of the Council, on the 6th November, in connection with the drainage question. An amendment that the clause re the attendance of Messrs Hesketh and Richmond be struck out, was lost, Messrs Walker, Gilmour and Page voting for it. ONEHUNGA. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council took place last night. Present: — Dr. Erson (Mayor), Messrs Rowe, Shaldrick, Sutherland, MeKenzie, Court, Hill, Hills, Tapp. A Peculiar Case. — The Resident Engineer wrote asking for a return ot leases and rents charged for certain allotments which were supposed to belong to the Railway Department but had been let for building purposes by the Council. The Town Clerk waß requested to give the .Department the required information. National Bank.—The local manager wrote pointing out thab the lease of the property would expire at the end of the month, and asked that the present arrange-" rnents might be continued.—Granted. Tramway Extension.—A petition presented by the inhabitants of Onehunga at the last meeting- of the Council, to the Mayor and Councillors, praying the Council to facilitate the extension of the tram serwee to Onehunga direct, again came up for consideration. The Mayor moved, and Mr Rowe seconded, "Thatthe Council support the prayer of the petitioners." Mr James Shaldrick said he entirely supported the proposed extension. The motion was agreed to by all Councillors present.
