THE FATAL ACCIDENT AT ELLERSLIE RACECOURSE.
INQUIRY BY THE RACING CLUB'
This afternoon a meeting of the Committee of the Auckland Racing Club was held at the Racing Club office to inquire into the circumstances surrounding the death of Arthur Buckley, who met his death by accidentally falling from the mare Crazy Kata ab Ellerslie racecourse on Saturday last. Mr Thoa. Morrin presided. Mr A. E. Whitaker appeared on behalf of the Auckland Racing Club and examined the witnesses. Adam E. Byers, trainer of Crazy Kate, deposed thab bo wa9 on the course on Saturday, in company with Buckley. They were on the courae for the purpose of schooling Crazy Kate. Wstn&ss then described whab took place, and the fences jumped. ' : '■'["■ Mr Whitakor questioned the witness. He eaid thab one of the officers of the Club gave him permission to go over tho course. He did not think that it was necessary to obtain any other loave. Mr Perceval was on the course, bub ho did nob ask his permission. He had ridden over the steeplechase course and had never asked for leave. He knew it was necessary to obtain permission to work a horee over the course proper. John Ruddy, caretaker, said thab nobody asked for leave to go around the steeplechase course thab day. In answer to Mr Whitaker, witness said it was necessary to get leave to go over the course. The wire where the accident occurred waa put up last Saturday week. Nobody had a right to go over the steeplechase course without permission. The Chairman said he did nob see thar the Club was Do blame. He thought Byers was to blame for whab he had done. The inquiry waa adjournod until Friday for further evidence.
