RETURN OF STANBURY THE CHAMPION SCULLER.

HIS OPINION OF AMERICAN

SPORTSMEN,

James Stanbury, the champion ecullor of tho world, arrived in Sydney on October I9bh, in the Bteamer Warrimoo, from Vancouver. Asked as to his experiences in America, Stanbury said ho would tell his tale from the commencement :— " Somo timo ago," said an interviewer, "wo had a cable that you had boaten Gaudaur in a mile race in Indiana.' "16 Ib not true," said Stanbury; "I never met him tbero. I rowed exhibition racos with Stevenson and M'Lean for a purse; Gaudaur was not there. Taken altogether, in the States they treated mo very badly. I must now go back a little. From Austin I wont to Detroit, and from there to Chicago. Of course I visited tho World'a Fair. Dr, Renwick, our Commissioner, gavo me a very nice letter of introduction to Mr Davis, tho head Commissioner, and did all in bis powor to help me. From Mr Davis I loarnod thab there was to be no exhibition rowing ab tho show. Here I mot plenty of Australian and British visitors, and was well receivod by them; in fact, nobody could have boon treatod better than I was bythom. Hanlan was about the only Amorican sculler from whom I received courteous treatment. He told mo that while in Australia he had been treated with the übmoab kindness, and that ho had resolved thab if ever ho gob the chance he would repay tb to any Australian oarsman who rnjghb visit tho States or Canada, While ab Detroit I dropped across Stephenson. He is training an amateur rowing club there, doing fairly well three or four months in tho year. From Chicago I travelled to Vancouver, where I loft Alec M'Lean, who will very probably follow me in the next boat. I received offers there to row races, but decided not to stop, aa 1 thoughb thab tho time would be too short' «• [ see thab you offered to row the winner of tho Sullivan-Bubear race in England 7 " Yes, bub through fooling about with Gaudaur I loata lot of time, and found than I would not bo able to get to England and to row thore before winter. My boats I loic in Indiana." . . . "The trouble," ho said, "in nob bein&r able to arrango a match with Gaudaur in America v/as because a stakeholder could not be found satisfactory to tho Canadian champion. Tho stake money was sent to Fox, bub the Canadians were nob satisfied , tho ' Detroit Free Press' declined to hold tho stakea, though both oaremon were satisfied. Aftor that Gaudaur issued several challenges, bub would nob say where nis stako money was."
