PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

The annual meoting of members of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animalo was held this afternoon in the Chamber of Commercej when Bishop Cowie presided. Annual Report.—Tho Secretary read the annual report as follows :—" In submitting their tenth annual report of the operations of tho Society, the Cointnitteo are again enabled, by tho usual special donations of au enthusiustic member, to present a favourable balance sheet showing only a itnall debit; ab the same tiuao they think the general public should not allow so largo a burden to fall on tho shoulders of one member; this mighb ba avoided if oach member would undertake to procure a new subscriber. Your Committoe regret that thoir attempt to geb Bands of Mercy established had not been attended with the satisfactory results they anticipated, but they yet have reason to hope that through the instrumentality of the Board of Education and tlioir inspectors so important a branch of education will obtain tho recognition it deserves. During the paab year many cases of lack cf horse power in public vehicles Lave been reported, and much difficulty has been experienced in cheeking this evil, especially at tho North Shore, in consequence of witnesses declining to give evidence, bub tho whole service having been now taken over by Msssra Paterson, it is folb that cause of complaint will bo removed. By the inspector's reporb it will be seen thab 387 cautions have been given, while ten prosecutions have rosulted in seven convictions, the fines amounting to £8 10s, which amounb is paid to the Government. In addition to tho fines inflicted in the Auckland district), convictions in oub districts havo been obtained through the instrumentaliby of the honorary agents cf the Society. This reporb would be incomplete without special recognition of the valuable assistance afforded by tho honorary solicitors, the honorary veterinary surgeon, the police force and the clergy of the district who have espoused tho causo of the dumb animals which the Society endeavours to protecb." Accounts. — Receipts, £165 Os 3d, of which £121 13s 6d from subscriptions ; £7 13s from Onchunga ; donations, £35 13s 9d; balanqtfin hand, Is Sd. Expendibure: Inspector's salary, £150 ; sundries, £14 ISs 7d; unpaid accounts, £7 sa.—The reports wcro adopted. Officers. —The retiring officers were reelected. The Chairman referred to the loss sustained by the death of Sir William Fox, and said they reverenced his memory jusb as did other charitable institutions, Messrs A. E. Whittaker, C. Purchase and T, R. Reed wore added to the lisb of honorary solicitors, and Messrs C. B. Baker and C. Dacro to tho Committee. The Chairman paid a tribute to the good work done by Mr Burt, Secretary, and Mr Redgato, Inspector. With rogerdjjto the debt, the Chairman said that while they were thankful to Mr C. J. Hutchinson for contributing £25 towards the expenses, still it was not creditablo to the citizens of Auckland thab ono man should bear tho whole burden. He crusted others would be induced to contribute. Mr F. Hull suggested chat the result of one football match would run tho Society for a yoar. Before the meeting closed votes of thanks wero accorded to all who had assisted the Society.
