Drunkenness, — One first offender was fined ss, or in default 24 hours' hard labour. John Cousins for having been drunk was lined 20s, or in default 14 days' hard labour. Jarae3 Thompson, for a similar offonce, was fined 10s, or 48 hours.

Vaguascy.—George Turner was charged with having beon found by nicrhb sloepiut? underneath a house in Coolc-stroet, the propoity of Mrs Peterson.—Defendant admitted having been under the house.— Sergoat Gamble said that the man had no homo, and was in a fearful condition from vermin. He had been found by Constablo Carroll under the houue.—Dr. Giles said this was not a mere case of poverty. He identified the articles produced as belonging to tho Costley Homo.—Chief-Detectiva Graoo deposod to arresting tho accused with the property in hla posscduion. Prisoner stated that Mr Moss had been very good to him during the fourteen months he was in the Home. He simply wanted clothes when ho loft, and his own had been taken away from him whon he entered the institution. — Dr. Giles held that tho case was proved.— Tho same prisoner was further charged witli having aseaultod Alexander Phillip;) on Sunday.—Prisoner plondcd nob guilty.— Alexander Phillips deposed he was an inmate of the Costley Home. On Sunday the accused assaulted him with a stick. Witness struck back in self-defence with the stick which he had wrested from tho man's haud.—John Anderson deposed to witnessin" the assault.—John Moss aleo gave evidence as to dressing a out on prisoner's head.—Dr. Giles said there were no previous convictions againob tho accused.— Prisoner was sentenced to fourteen days hard labour for tho larceny, and lined 5h or 7 days' for tho aibsaulb, the sentences to be concurrent. Bkkcur Work.—Maria Wilson attended at the Court and said that she had arranged for hor little girl to be cared for by tho wife of a farmer ab Mount Roskill. This child was charpod ab the Police Court last Saturday with having been found residing in a" brothel. Tho mother then denied that f>be kept a brothol, and asked to be allowed to board her child out, rather than it should be committed to an Industrial School.—Dr. Giles said this morning, that ifc was only beeauoa he; had gathered that tho mother waa rather fond of her child, that he had hesitated about sending her to the Industrial School. Ho would adjourn the case until Saturday pending inquiries by tho Police regarding tho family with whom it was propoeed to board tho child.
