DEATH OF NATIVE CHIEF.
Last night a well-known Maori chief, "VVirihana Takaanini—generally known aa Takaanini Wilson—died suddenly in his whare at the native settlement ab Fukaki, near Mangere mountain, on the shore of the Manukau Harbour. Takaanini, whose burly figure was well-knewn in Auckland, was an unusually big man, and was a native of considerable rank and influence, being allied to the Waikato natives. He was a man in the prime of life. Takaanini'3 mother, Piria, died aboub a year ago. The usual Maori tangi ia to be held over his remains.
