PROTECTION OF CHILDREN.
The first case in Auckland under the Protection of Ghildrens Act was called to-day at the Police Court. A boy named Daniel Donovan was brought to the police station yesterday by Constable Carroll, and later on an information.' was laid against a married woman named Kate Donovan. She appeared at the Police Court this morning.and was charged that, being the person having control ot Daniel Donovan, a boy under 14 years of age, she did wilfully illtreat him in a manner likely to cause Buch child unnecessary suffering. Mr J. O'Meagher appeared for the accused and asked for a remand, which was agreed to by His Worship, who fixed Friday ' for the hearing. Inspector Hickson asked whether ha should retain possession of the boy, as the Bench had power to make an order to that effect.
Mr O'Meaghor said the boy had nothing to fear from his mother between now and Friday. The evidence would go far to justify what aho had done, and show that she was nob in the habit of ill-treating the boy. His Worship called the boy, who stated he was uob afraid to go home, consequently an order was not made for the police to retain him in possession.
