THE MEASLES EPIDEMIC.
FIVE HUNDRED DEATHS, INCLUD.
ING MANY CHIEFS.
Nukualofa, August 30. Tongatabu may now be considered free from measles, though the mortality is still far above the average, contagious dysentery , being still prevalent. This, in fact, is what has caused the greatest number of deaths, bub few beingattributable to actual measles. From first to last there have been some four hundred deaths in Tongatabu attributablo to measles and its attendant disease, continuous dysentery. Reports from the other groups shew considerable mortality.
Among those who have died are several well-known chiefs.i
The passengers by the Upolu on her down trip were quarantined ab the island of Tafa.
