THE KERMADEC ISLANDS.
PROPOSED WHALING STATION.
APPLICATION FOR MEYER ISLET.
TnE Kermadcc Islands, New Zealand's little " dopendency," to the north of the colony, are, it appears from an application made to-day to the Auckland Crown Lands Board, to become the scene of an important whaling station boforo long. The Messrs Couk Bros, and Mr H. K. Hovell, a former settler on the island, propose to establish a whaling and fishcuring station on Meyer Islet, in the group adjoining Sunday Island.
Mr Hovell referred to an objection that had been put. before the Board that tho small harbour at Meyer Island (the only harbour in the group) was to be reserved for tho common use of those who live on Sunday Island, and said that Mr Thomas Bell and himself were the only holders on Sunday Island_ out of tour holdings, tho other runs having been surrendered. He asked to retain a frontage of one chain to tho cave at Meyet Island, by two chains deep, for the purpose of a whaling and fishing station.—lb was decided to accede to Mr Hovell's request, an area of halt-an-acre—2 chains frontage by 2£ chains deep—being granted to him.
