THE TAINUI.-VALUE OF SAIL POWER.

A' reporb of the voyage of the ShawSavill direcb steamer Tainui, which arrived at) Lyttelton yesterday from London, via ports, is to hand, and it appears from ib that five days after leaving the Cape, when the ship was well down the Southern ocean, that the high-presßure cyclinder cover was smashed by the piston. The engines are triple, so that by the use of the other two cylinders, though low and intermediate, a fair speed was maintained. The situation was rendored far les3 serious, al?o, by the sailing equipment of the Bhip. The Tainui is well off in this respect, carrying a good sail area, square and fore and aft, and for 4,450 miles, the distance she was from Tasmania at the time of the breakdown, sbe came along in grand style. The result was that she was bub threo or four days or so late in reaching Hobart, and she was able to continue her voyage eastward, towards New Zealand, taking the full benefit oftheN.W. toS. W. winds.
