THE POLICE FORCE.
TO BE STRENGTHENED IN AflCE.' LAND.
(BY TELEGRAPH. — PARLIAMENTARY Rj.
PORTER.)
Wellington, this day. Though bhe Premier informed the Ho™ the other day that_ ib was nob intended to make any general increase to the strength of the police, he added it would be necessary to Btrengthen the force in some particular districts where ib was weak. I. j 8 lieved increases will bo made in Auckland and Wellington, but the force is suffi. ciently strong ab Christchurch and Dunedin. This fact is a further proof of the shifting of population and crime from tha South Island to the North. Ab each centre a matron will probably be anpointed, but in Wellington it is expected that aboub four foot constables and on« mounted constable will bo added to tho force.
