Boring operations nb Kamo havo been carried on for some time, and the new bore struck a Honm of coal Gft thick at a dopbh of 732 ft. This is considered a very important discovery by those competent to judge aB proving thab in all probability coal exists all under the Whangarei township and suburbs.
Mr James Rolleston, of Hikurangi, is making extensive additions to his hotel ab Hikurangi, and when completed bhey will make the accommodation second to none in the district).
The valuation for rating purposes on new buildings erected in Whangarei township during the past 8 monthß is over £3,000. The total rateable valuo for tho town district is now over £50,000.
Several new buildings are to be erected hero within the next few weeks and tho place is steadily increasing in size and prosperity.
The Ngunguru Coal Company havo now pot in their drives under the hill, and the coal slill maintains its quality. Tho eoam is 6ft thick and runs very evonly, and the output is steadily increasing daily. This mine will be very choaply worked as it is level free, and no pumping ia necossary. Nothing has yet been done ftboub ballasting tho Hikurangi railway lino 'that is in the .vay of effecting a speedy completion of tho line). It is estimated that it will take the atonebreaker over six months to do the quantity required, and tho stonebrenkor is nob yob in the district.—(Whangarei Correspondent.)
