THE NEW ZEALAND FOOTBALL REPRESENTATIVES.

JOTTINGS BY THE WAY, (Special to this Stab.) Brisbane, July 18. The New Zealand team had a splendid trip from Sydney to Brisbane; the water was aa calm aa a . duck pond, and consequently no one > suffered from seasickness. The boab arrived alongside the wharf about twelve o'clock on Friday, when the team was driven to the Metropolitan Hotel, where they, stayed.. In the afternoon the football ground was visited, and a little practice indulged in, and all hands felt much better and fitter after their week's spell. The New Zealand team were accorded a great reception from the Bananalanders. There waa a large and representative gathering. Mr E. J. Stuvens, the president of the Queensland Rugby Union, said they were glad to welcome them,, not only as footballers, but as coming from a colony 'which had rendered such generous and timely assistance to Queensland in the time of her distress through the floods in February last, The weather waa very fine for our first match against Queensland, our boys found it too fine, and we would have liked it a little colder, The New Zealanders were greeted with loud cheers as they walked across the grounds There was a large at): tendance, including His Excellency the Governor (Sir Henry Norman) who waa attended by Lady Norman and the Hon. Gerard Wallop. His Honor the Chief Justice (Sir Samuel Griffith) and Lady Griffith were also among the fashionable throng which occupied the grandstand and the lawn. . Aa you, perhaps, have already seen, there was an alteration in the team. Owing to some members of the team being dissatisfied with the teams put in the field of late, a new selection committee was elected, and consists of Ellison, Bayly, Jervis, and D'Arcy, This committee resolved to try a change, and accordingly, owing to Gage's bad ankle, Bayly was put in aa a half-back, and D'Arcy aa a wing forward, Harper taking the former's place as three-quarter. This change proved to be a ?ood one. The forwards played a splendid game, getting the ball in bhe scrums and heeling out claanly, consequently the backs had more shows, their passing at times being firstclass. Wilson (full-back) played a good game as far as kicking was concerned, but bis collaring was not up to rep. form. . Harper (three-quarter) did some very useful work, his kicking and punting into touch being really good. Wynyard (centre three-qnarter) played a really good game, kicking splendidly and doing his work in a very clean manner. His try waa obtained by a clever feinting run. Jervis (three-quartor) played in his usual form, going in principally for kicking, as ho was playing under a great disadvantage, getting his jawbone splintered eariy in the first; spell, which gave him much pain. The knock, however, is nob a very serious one and will require a little rest. Butland (halt) played a brilliant game, his passing was perfect and his defence equally aa good. Bayly (half) waa in this place for tho first time, and acquitted himself in fine style, passing and tackling splendidly. All the forwards played well, and it is bard to separate them, Cockroft perhaps being the beat. Murray (Auckland) played his usual hard game from start to linish, scrumming well and showing up in the open. Speight (Auckland) waa most conspicuous on the line, and put in some useful work. His play in the open was also good, and was always to the fore. " Old Scrooge " in the Brisbane Courier finishes an interesting description of tho match, which he calh "the battle of the moa and the kangaroo," with the following :—" The kangaroo's tail is between its legs, and the ears are altogether lost. But the moa 1" -
