WELLINGTON NOTES.

THE NEW PUBLIC LIBRARY.

A GOVERNMENT TAILOti WANTED,

WELLINGTON WOOLLEN MILLS.

(BY TKLKGKAML—OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Wellington, this day. The new Public Library was opened yesterday with 6orco ceremony by Judge Richmond. The building is new, and when a supply of now books arrives, everything about it will bo now. The various rooms are largo, lofty, and well lighted with electric light. The floors are laid down with New Zealand linoleum, quite a new thing, very duiable and very elegant. There is an ample supply of newspapers and periodicals, and the facilities for reading of the same conveniently arc excellont. The Auckland Star and " New Zealand Graphic" occupy conspicuous positions. The Trades Council protest against tenders b<3in<* invited for tailoring of any kind by tho Government. They objecb to letter-carriers' uniforms being tendered for, and have resolved to write to the Hon. J. G. Ward pointing out the evils of the tendering system, and surest that Government workshops should be established to turn out all such uniforms as tho Government require. If any rumour reached you that there is likely to be trouble with the natives in rogard to the closing of the Wairnrapa Lake, I may atate that ie is not so. No trouble ia apprehended.

A cablegram has at length beon received from tho Sydney polics, stating that a warrant has been issued for tho arrest of Mills for tho jewellery robbery there, and that an officer is comini.' over armed with tho same.

The "Post" says tho correspondent of the " Auckland Herald " mixed up Howell and Hovoll in tho moat extraordinary way, evidently undor the impression that Howell and Hovoll wore ono and the same person, tho rosulb being perplexing to Auckland people. To enlighten tho Auckland public let me say that thero is a Dean Hovell and Canon Howell—two rovorend gentlemen, but by no means tho same individual.

Tho Wellington Woollen Will Company declared an interim dividend for the six month.o, ending 31st March, at tho rate of 8 per cent, por annum. Operations during that period wero in every way successful. Large additions and improved machinery have reduced production-coat remarkably. Theissuoof unallotted shares was very satisfactory, as, although allotment was strictly limited to shareholders, only 2,000 out) of 8,700 remain unallotted. The Sharebrokers' Association is asking the Company to allow tho public to tako theso, and this will probably bo douo.
