Bank of England returns published to day show the total reserve in notes and bullion to bo £16,720,000, the proportion of reserve to liabilities being 48.14. Three months' bills are discounted at If per cent. Consols, 99J. New Zealand 4 per cent, inscribed stock, 105 ; three and a half ditto, 97i.
New Zealand iongberried wheat, ex warehouse, 30s, flat; South Australian wheat, ex warehouse, 33s 3d, quiet; Victorian ditto, 33b, flat. Frozen mutton, first quality, 4d l-16tli ; lamb, o£d ; beef, forequarters, 3fd ; hindquarters, 4;Jd. There is nothing doing in New Zealand hemp. Kauri gum : Good selected is in strong demand, fine pale scraped bringing £9 ; three-quarter scraped, £5 5s : pickings, £2 10s. '
Sugar : Best German bseb, 16s 4Jd, firm ; Java, 17s 6d ; No. 1, best Scotch pig iron, f.0.b., in Clyde, 40s 9d, flat.
Wool ia in strong demand and there is increased competition for most sorts. American buyers arc inactive.
