THE LOSS OF THE MAILE.

A SEARCH FO.R TRACES.

STEAMER DESPATCfiBD FROM

HOBART.

Hobart, this day. A tug has been despatched to search tbe Straits and Islands for traces of the missing Auckland schooner Maile. [From this message it appears that the Tasmanian Government has decided to make a thorough search of tbe islands and rocks in Bass Straits, for possible survivors of tho Maile, or for wreckage which would throw light on her disappearance. The Maile is believed to have been lost in Baes Straits. In the southern part of Bass Straits, which separate Australia from Tasmania, there are a number of islands, of which Flinders Island is the principal. North west of this is a small cluster, the Kent Group. There are numerous dangerous rocks between the Kent Group and Flinders. Several of the islands in the vicinity, such as Hummock, Chappell, The Sisters, etc., are barren rocks, and mosb of the islands in the Straits are seldom visited. Ib is thought bhab ib is probable more wreckage will be found there even if survivors are not found.]
