Our cable news from Western Australia to-day is of a disquieting character. Hitherto, by strict quarantine, these colonies have beon kept clear of that loathsome scourge, small-pox, but through negligence on the part of the Governmenb of bhe youngest colony, the disease, introduced by a vessel from Singapore, has obtained a farm hold. Eighteen cases are reported to be now under surveillance. _.o doubt the adjacent coloniea will adopt stringent measures to protect themselves, bub ?b is less easy to do this against a neighbour than against a distant port. There has i:eeu a groat neglect of vaccination in Sydney, a_d if small-pox became established there the consequences would be most disastrous. We trust, however, that the precautions now being adopted, will aveib such a calamity. The matron of tho Jubilee Kindergarten states thab there baa been a falling ofl in bhe attendance at tho school since he beginning of the present year. Up to the end of last year aboub 70 attended the school each day. Last week the average attendance was only 42, and to^ay there wero only 27 children present. The attendance in the creche numbers six daily. The management hope to see a larger attendance as tho charge is only nominal. The Tokabea Goklmining Company's property consisting of machinery, buildX etc., wis offered for sale by public auction this morning by Mr R. C. Carr, on behalf of tho liquidators, but brought oub no bidden. If people who are troubled with colds will take Ayer's Cherry Pectoral before going to church, they will avoid coughing. The Pectoral soothes and heals the irritated tissues, and controls all disposition to cough.—(Advt.)
