EXPLANATION BY THE DUCHESS.
FINED AND IMPRISONED.
London, April 18. In the Probate, Divorce, and Admiralty Division to-day, the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland appeared to answer a charge of seizing papers from Stafford House, St. James', S.W., from the administrator in the estate of her late husband, and burning them. She explained that she had destroyed a letter from the late Duke written before marriage. Justice Sir Frans H. Jeune refused to accept an apology from the Duchess for her conduct, and inflicted a fine of He also ordered that she be imprisoned for six weeks for contempt of Court.
