THE BREAKDOWN OF THE MIOWERA.
The s.s. Kotomahana, which arrived irorn Sydney this afternoon, reports that while steaniing slowly down tho Sydney harbour, and clearing the Heads at 3.4£> p.m., she was followed by the Miowera at 5.40 p.m. The Miowera being then abouo lialf-a-miie astern and about thirty miles from Sydney Heads, slowly turned round, and to the great surprise of those on board tho Rotomahana she appeared to proceed back towards Sydney, her steam at tho same timo escaping furiously. A Rtricb watch was kept from tho Rotomahana, but no signals being made it was concluded that nothing serious had taken plaoo. and tho vessel continued on her voyage towards Auckland. Tho Kofcomahana came along under easy steam, there beingno particular reason for hurry, tho rnail3 for New Zealand not being on board. The run from Melbourne to Sydney wharf occupied the Rotomahana 40.J, hours, tho Miowera, which left Melbourne an hour after the former vessel, not arriving at Sydney until 2 p.m. on the 23rd, having taken 70 hour 3 doing the trip, owing to a breakdown in ber machinery.
