HALF-HOLIDAY MOVEMENT.

Donedin, this day. In* order to facilitate the observance of the Saturday half-holiday by shopkeepers, thl3 City Council tins resolved to pay all tlieir employeoa on Friday instead of Saturday in future. Many other employers have adopted this practice. Auctioneers aro expected to agree to hold stock sales on Friday instead of Saturday. The Railway Dopartmenb are running cheap excursion trains from the city every Saturday afternoon, and will be asked to issue cheap tickets from country districts on Friday, and theCommitteehasunderconBideration a proposal to hold Saturday evening concerts. Shopkeepers propose to form a permanent organisation to attend to matters of common interest. For example, it IB pointed out that fro?h legislation in connection with tho half-holiday will probably bo required next Parliamentary suasion, nnd it would bo well if ehopkeepors could make their unitod influence felt, if the day is to bo tixoil by law for compulsory closing. The matter is to bo considered nt a meotincr next week, when tho half-holiday committee is expected to disband, having finished its work. Tho Mayor announcos that ho has arranged for the preservation of order on Saturday night, and advises the public nob to collect in the streets, but to keep moving.
