SHOCKING FATALITY.

REN DROWNED.
FIVE DEAD BODIES RECOVERED,

Dargaville, this day. News was received here on Saturday night, of the drowning of a woman and four chil. dren at Mangapai, Wairoa River, 15 miles from Dargaville.
It appears thab on Friday afternoon a woman named Goldsboro, wife of a gumdigger, and her four children, between the ages of 12 and 7, were crossing a creek on a tree.
The bridge, which owing to the spring tides had been loosened, canted and threw all in the water.
A child three years old only witnessed the accident. The father and eldosb boy, who were in Dargaville selling gum, came home early on Saturday morning, and the child informed them that their mother was under the lags.
The fathfar informed Messrs P. White and Bascombe, who immediately gave assistance. They soon discovered the mother and got her ashore.
Tho father with the other three children came to Dargaville and informed the police, who wenb up the river on Sunday morning to recover the bodies. Meanwhile, Messrs White and Bascombe had found the bodies, and had jaab succeeded in getting the last ashore on the arrival of the police. The five bodies were pub in a boat and brought to Dargaville to await an iuquest.
